LeadCheck Lead Swabs are based on how lead reacts with certain compounds that turn into strong colors when the two come into contact. When LeadCheck Swabs come into contact with even a minuscule amount of lead, they turn a pink or red hue within just 30 seconds and the color stays for hours.
In laboratory tests, LeadCheck Swabs have shown detection levels of as little as 2 micrograms of lead. In multiple independent studies, these lead testing kits have shown accuracy to to detect just .5% lead in paint with virtually 100% accuracy. In other words, these things work!
YES! The U.S Government banned lead paint in homes in 1978, but up to that point it was extremely common for lead paint to be used in residences due to the fact that it was so readily available and cost effective to implement. Any buildings built before that time are very likely to contain lead paint, which even in small amounts can have horrible affects on your health and well-being; especially for children. Levels of lead exceeding 1 milligram per square centimeter are considered to be hazardous by the federal government.
You first must identify a surface to check for, preferably in an inconspicuous area like a baseboard or lower door frame. From there you need to cut a small chisel-shaped incision into the surface. When you complete this step it is important to be sure that you get down to the surface and through all layers of paint, otherwise you may get inaccurate results.
Next, squeeze the swab until you feel a light crack and the detection liquid will begin to flow to the tip of the swab. To view the full instructions, click here.
